Also -- a lot of truck buyers don't want their trucks to be that big. They just end up with them because those are the only trucks they can find. Ford introduced the Maverick in 2021 - a truck the same size as a 1990s Ranger - and it sold out in a couple months for the 2022 model.
The 2023 model sold out in less than a week when they reopened order banks in September of 2022.
Right now (July of 2023) the 2024 order banks are open, and some dealers have so many unbuilt 2023 orders they aren't taking any new ones -- filling all their allocations with unbuilt 2023 rollovers. It's outselling every mid-sized truck except the Toyota Tacoma.
And it would probably outsell that, if Ford could build enough of them.
So combine the weird fetish with trucks we have in this country with a lack of small trucks being available for those who actually do need a truck and we get this clusterfuck.
